they're off the ice after 15 days and 9 hours...
2 updates...
8th May
1. We started at 0345hrs local and it is now 1315hrs we have only done 6 ½ miles. We have just stopped because Ben’s ski bindings have fallen off. We are just trying to fix them. It’s taken us 9 ½ hrs to do 6 ½ miles, 3.3 miles to go. We have been roped together for the whole descent. Terrain has been ice blocks the size of houses, rounded with snow in between them and melt water lakes really hard to keep on track, there were crevasses earlier but now it seems to be slightly flatter. Good visibility of the mountains around us. It’s been a hard slog. We are both very tired and very hungry- just want to get off the ice.
2. After setting off at 0345 we finally made land fall just after 2200hrs local time in the evening (8th may). The 9.8 miles saw us roped together constantly through enormous crevasses, rock, snow and melt water currents. The entire icecap was broken up into huge boulders and deep channels that made navigation very hard indeed. During the course of the day Ben’s bindings broke and finally with 3hrs to go Ian’s ski broke in half- possibly due to the pressure of some of the uphill climbs. During the course of the afternoon we met someone out hiking who’s been out for 3 days he said conditions had changed so much in 3 days he was worried about getting back so came back with us. We both have taken numerous falls today and are battered and bruised, now all that’s left is to haul our pulks a couple of hundred yards over rock debris and set up camp for the night. Tomorrow morning we set off to run the final 20miles to Kangerlussaq to finish our adventure from coast to coast.
